Join us for our small group Alcatraz swim and start your weekend off properly! We offer this swim every Friday morning 10 months of the year. It’s the the classic Alcatraz to San Francisco open water swim and can be completed by most moderately experienced open water swimmers.
We swim year round with only a suit, cap and goggles — but we’re acclimated and used to our water temperatures. For most who fly in to swim with us, this might be lower than what you’re used to and, as a result, choose to wear a wetsuit. We don’t care what you swim in though, we just want you to swim and enjoy yourself.
SF Bay water temperatures range between 52ºF – 58ºF December through June 15th or so. Summer and fall water temperatures increase slightly to the low to mid 60s by September/October, which historically are the best months to swim due to the least amount of fog forming. There is a fair amount of variability/volatility in water temperatures year round — it’s important to mention this — We sometimes will have 56ºF water in January and 52ºF water in June…
How we’re different:
Unlike the mass-market ‘Escape’ swims which charge hundreds of dollars to be one of the 300, 400, or even 700+ person herd of swimmers jumping off a ferry, we limit this weekly Friday swim to 3 people! As always, if this schedule doesn’t work for you, get in touch. We can schedule a custom swim to accomplish any Alcatraz goals you have or offer a solo swim and even include the opportunity to have guest(s) on the boat to watch your swim…
This swim is typically about 1.9 miles (3 km) and we swim with the ebb tide.
TIME IN THE WATER:
The time to complete this distance is usually about an 1-hour 15-minutes, unless the group is particularly fast.
