Michael Tschantz-Hahn is a seasoned veteran in the world of open water swimming and a respected figure in the community both as a coach and an athlete. In his early years, Tschantz-Hahn cultivated a foundation in aquatic sports as an age group swimmer and water polo player, laying a groundwork of discipline and determination to carry him through an impressive career. The 1980s marked his foray into triathlons, during which he rediscovered his affinity for swimming, especially open water events. This passion guided him to significant milestones, including a successful solo English Channel attempt in 2009, participation in the formidable Tampa Bay 24-mile swim, and competing in the 25-km National Championships. His personal record also showcases enduring commitment with numerous 10km swims spanning many years.
Transitioning from a competitor to a mentor, Tschantz-Hahn has dedicated himself to nurturing both young aspiring swimmers and a masters swimming program in Marin County. He is a dedicated member of the South End Rowing Club and the Dolphin Swimming and Rowing Club in San Francisco, with his tenure at the latter spanning over twenty years. In 2022, he achieved the highest individual score in the Dolphin Club’s prestigious 10-swim annual open water swimming series, a testimony to his expertise, strength, and sustained commitment to the sport.
Mike contributes significantly at Pacific Open Water Swim Co., co-managing our open water swimming stroke clinics, as a valued coach, and leader in our adventure and marathon swimming events on the water. Drawing from years of expertise, he fosters budding talent, imparting both skill and the joy found in the sport.
Beyond coaching, Michael has held a pivotal role as a board member of the Northern California Open Water Swimming Association since its inception in 2018, actively contributing to the growth and guidance of marathon open water swimming in and around San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, and Northern California.
Of his many recent swims, this memorable, fun, and challenging swim in November 2020 was a long-time goal. At short notice, Mike swam 12 miles from his home in Marin to the Golden Gate Bridge, which we captured in this inspiring video.
