Course Difficulty Scale

Tailoring Your Swims Based on Difficulty

Our “Open Water Swimming Course Difficulty Scale” is a helpful tool for swimmers looking to participate in our swims and understand what we expect the conditions and difficulty to be, in advance . This scale, ranging from 1.0 Beginner to 5.0 Extreme, is designed to provide swimmers with a clear understanding of what each course may offer at the time of scheduling. It’s especially useful for those planning marathon swims or engaging in marathon training. While the scale offers a baseline understanding of various conditions, such as distance, current, vessel traffic, and the impact of cold water, it’s important to note that environmental conditions can significantly alter the difficulty of a course. For instance, a course rated as Intermediate might present more challenges if environmental factors like wind or current intensity increase on the day of the swim. Swimmers should use this scale as a guideline to prepare for their open water adventures. It’s crucial to stay informed about the latest weather and water conditions, as these can elevate the challenge level of a swim, especially for longer courses or marathon training sessions. This scale aims to help swimmers make informed decisions, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience in the open water.

  • 1.0 Beginner (Equivalent to a Lap Pool): This level features calm conditions akin to a lap pool. It includes short distances of less than 1 mile, with no current, minimal vessel traffic, negligible wind, and almost no waves or chop.
  • 1.5. Novice: A step up from beginner, this level presents conditions slightly more challenging than a lap pool. Swimmers face distances up to 1 mile, very light currents and/or vessel traffic, and minor wind or wave activity.
  • 2.0 Intermediate: This level introduces swimmers to natural elements. It encompasses moderate distances (1-2 miles), mild currents, occasional vessel traffic, light winds, and/or small waves.
  • 2.5 Seasoned Intermediate: Offering more challenges than the intermediate level, this stage includes distances up to 2.5 miles, moderate currents, regular vessel traffic, moderate winds, and noticeable chop/swell/waves.
  • 3.0 Advanced: Characterized by challenging conditions, this level involves long distances (2-3 miles), moderate to strong currents, regular vessel traffic, moderate winds, and/or significant chop/swell/wave activity.
  • 3.5 Proficient Advanced: A step above advanced, this level includes distances over 3 miles, strong currents, heavy vessel traffic, strong winds, and/or large waves.
  • 4.0 Expert: Suitable for experienced swimmers, this level features very long distances (over 3 miles), strong currents, heavy vessel traffic, strong winds, and/or large chop/swells/waves.
  • 4.5 Elite Expert: Approaching extreme conditions, this level involves distances over 3 miles, very strong currents, intense vessel traffic, high winds, and/or significant chop/swell/wave activity.
  • 5.0 Extreme: This is the most challenging level, featuring extremely long distances, very strong currents, intense vessel traffic, high winds, significant chop/swell/wave activity, and/or other challenging conditions.

Note: This scale serves as a general guideline. Swimmers should always consider their own abilities, experience, and safety precautions when participating in our swims.

Here’s a concise table summarizing the open water swimming difficulty levels. This table can be effectively used in the footer of a course description:
