Swimming Alcatraz is often an important first goal/milestone swim for many open water swimmers. For experienced swimmers visiting the San Francisco Bay Area, it’s a great swim with amazing views you’ll want to have on your swim resume.
This swim is not particularly difficult for those with a bit of open water experience though you will need to have the ability to swim 2 miles or so without stopping. It’s also a good idea to have at least some cold water swimming experience (<60°F/15°C).
DEPENDING ON THE TIDE, THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPICAL ROUTES…
Assisted swims (wetsuits, fins, etc) are welcome if it’ll make it more comfortable for you and we’d like to make it clear that this should not be your first open water swim.
We offer both private solo and group Alcatraz swims year-round with as little as a day or two notice outside of our scheduled Friday morning swims if you cannot make it for our weekly Alcatraz.
